For Your Eyes Only

In her debut solo show at Unit London, Oh de Laval will continue her comic explorations of the power of seduction.
Oh de Laval's work takes a wry look at contemporary masculinity: the hapless lover is often depicted in desperate, violent situations, ensnared by the machinations of a temptress. She is adamant her works do not benefit from a feminist reading; they are, above all, humorous snapshots of the small moments in our lives, those that involve luck, love and cruel fate.
Oh de Laval was plucked from relative obscurity, showing her works on Instagram. She is the perfect embodiment of Unit London's desire to bring previously unrecognised artists to the fore: an exciting prospect developing her style and narratives with real maturity. Oh de Laval cites anecdotes, the kind delivered with great zeal in the corners of pubs, as the genesis for this show. She is an unabashed anglophile, something reflected in her humorous titles and wry, witty visual language. For Your Eyes Only is sure to be a charming yet challenging show, one that cements Laval’s reputation as a burgeoning voice amongst contemporary painting.
Oh de Laval currently lives and works in Manchester, she is half-Polish, half-Thai and claims to like “seeing what people are afraid of and why.” She studied for two years at the Academy of Fine Arts Warsaw, before moving on to study sociology at the University of Warsaw, where she became fascinated by Durkheim’s notions of deviance, something that influences her work today. “With Oh it’s amazing to have found a young artist who has barely shown before joining the gallery. With such mature and smart narratives in the work, she offers something unique to the majority of the roster: this incredible narrative based storytelling.” Joe Kennedy, Co-founder, Unit London.
